Burkini Ban Suspended: "illegally breached fundamental freedoms", says French Court

According to the news, France's highest administrative court has suspended a controversial ban on "burkini" swimsuits in one town, Villeneuve-Loubet saying it "seriously and clearly illegally breached fundamental freedoms." The recent overturning of the ban could signal the eventual end to the policy across the country but does it signify the end the cultural debate and tension surrounding Burkini, Muslim woman and more specifically the clash of civilization?

As French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said in a statement on Facebook that the ruling “doesn’t exhaust the debate that has opened up in our society on the question of the burkini.”

Burkini is just one example of the conflict of cultures in Europe. The rising Muslim or Arab population in the western world is stirring a constant clash of civilization as the western society is increasingly reluctant to celebrate the diversity of cultures especially in the wake of terror attacks and skewed media presentation. The right wing politicians are exploiting the terror attacks to incite hatred and anti-Muslim sentiments.

Yet Twitter community has largely condemned the ban posting interesting pictures of nuns and divers in dresses that cover their full bodies.

Christian nuns in full habit, including a long skirt, long sleeves and a head covering, are a common sight on the beaches across Europe.

“I can only think of our nuns, and I think of our peasant grandmothers who still wear head coverings,” says Bishop Nunzio Galantino, the secretary-general of the Italian bishops’ criticizing the ban.
